Surf Bagel to open second location

Popular eatery eyes late November opening at Midway
October 20, 2016

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and lovers of Lewes’ Surf Bagel have a new reason to be thankful.

The popular Route 1 eatery will be opening a second location in Midway Shopping Center at the former K&H Hot Bagels. Co-owner Dave Vitella said he hopes the new location will be open before Thanksgiving.

Vitella, who owns Surf Bagel with his brother, Tom, said the new store would offer breakfast only. It will also provide a backup location in case something happens at either store, he said.

Surf Bagel has experimented with a second location before, briefly opening one at the Atlantic Sands in Rehoboth Beach. That store closed quickly, Vitella said, because they could not cook within the building itself. He said they had to go up five floors to the hotel kitchen to cook food, which quickly became unsustainable.

The advantage to the former K&H building, Vitella said, is the building is already designed to make bagels. The opportunity to lease the building came about quickly, he said, after K&H’s ownership decided to move on.

Surf Bagel’s popular flagship store on Route 1 serves bagels, bagel sandwiches, subs, wraps and salads, and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The store offers made-from-scratch New York-style bagels as well as a mix of cream cheeses.
