Surfboard designer visits art class at Fred Thomas Middle School

Discussing a particular tool used to shape the edges of a surfboard are (l-r) designer Ian Roth, and students Alperen Telingun and Chase Rash.
Students at Fred Thomas Middle School recently had the chance to connect with local artist Ian Roth of IMR Concepts. Over the course of two days, Roth visited art classes and shared his process of designing and making surfboards.
Roth covered everything from initial shaping of the foam board to painting and glassing the boards. Roth showed students the art tools he uses, along with photos of his creative workspace. They were able to ask questions about his background experience, business model and what it’s like being a surfboard designer and creator.
Next, the middle schoolers will work in groups to draw their own surfboard designs and use cardboard materials to cut out and paint a finished product.
