Surfgimp Foundation announces $100,000 in grants for 2024

Aiming to reduce financial barriers to an active lifestyle for people with disabilities, the Surfgimp Foundation announces it will be award more than $100,000 in grants this year to people around the world, including Delaware.

There are 55 grantees in 2024, ranging in age from 7 to 62. Grants will help individuals pay for travel and entry fees to compete in events, equipment for travel and for experiences. Examples include rock climbing, softball, snowboarding, an all-terrain chair, a travel case for a racing wheelchair, an adaptive bicycle, an archery bow, a custom surfboard and wetsuit, therapeutic horseback riding, strength training for sled hockey, and for basketball, track and soccer.

There is no age requirement for recipients of support from Surfgimp Foundation. To date, the foundation has served individuals from ages 2 to 66, and several youth organizations. A typical grant ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. The yearly grant window is open from Oct. 1 to Dec. 1, with awards distributed by mid-February.

The foundation was established in 2017 in memory of Milton resident, quadriplegic and Surfgimp Jay Liesener. The foundation’s first grant was awarded in 2018. Since then, more than $360,000 has been awarded to individuals and several organizations. All proceeds raised each year are given away during the next grant cycle. 

Winter Beach Bash set Jan. 13

Surfgimp Foundation will host its fifth annual Winter Beach Bash from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13, at Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach, 113 Dickinson Ave.

Tickets are $105 and can be purchased online at surfgimpfoundation.org or at the door. Tickets include a catered event by Jimmy’s Grille Catering, a four-hour open bar and live music by Just The Tip. There will also be a live auction and large silent auction.
