Following a string of four straight losses the Sussex Academy baseball team thought should have been wins, the Seahawks were upended by Conrad School 11-3 April 11.
Any chance the boys had to break their losing streak was greatly minimized by the performance of southpaw Sawyer DeLuca, who drove in five runs on offense and struck out eight on the mound. The lefty was locating his fastball and mixing his off-speed pitches well, keeping Sussex Academy off balance.
Senior Maddox Roberts started on the bump for the Seahawks and kept things close before Conrad plated four in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Another three in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth inning put the Seahawks on the ropes, but a patient approach at the plate gave Sussex Academy the run needed to keep the game going.
Sussex Academy threatened once again in the seventh inning, but Conrad managed to escape and take the 11-3 win. Laine Roberts and Derek Sachs were the other two Seahawks to drive in runs in the loss.
Delaware Tech’s baseball field will be where the Seahawks play next, a 4:15 p.m. affair Tuesday, April 14, against Milford.
