Sussex Academy celebrates Under Construction Homecoming

October 27, 2025

Sussex Academy kick-started its Under Construction Homecoming festivities Oct. 16, when the field hockey team defeated Indian River 7-2. The volleyball team kept the momentum rolling with a program-record 11th win, a 3-0 victory over Tatnall School Oct. 17, before the boys’ soccer team won the Battle of Georgetown 2-0 over Sussex Central.

Parking was at a premium, given the proximity of their opponent and the expectations of the boys’ soccer game, and the same could be said for the seats. Sussex Academy packed the student section to the point of spilling out along the fences.

Seniors Rocco Buonopane and Katya Geyer were crowned Homecoming king and queen.

Not to be overlooked, the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams clinched the Henlopen South by upending Lake Forest in their dual-meet finale Oct. 8.

Aaron Mushrush joined the sports team in Summer 2023 to help cover the emerging youth athletics scene in the Cape Region. After lettering in soccer and lacrosse at Sussex Tech, he played lacrosse at Division III Eastern University in St. David's, PA. Aaron coached lacrosse at Sussex Tech in 2009 and 2011. Post-collegiately, Mush played in the Eastern Shore Summer Lacrosse League for Blue Bird Tavern and Saltwater Lacrosse. He competed in several tournaments for the Shamrocks Lacrosse Club, which blossomed into the Maryland Lacrosse League (MDLL). Aaron interned at the Coastal Point before becoming assistant director at WMDT-TV 47 ABC in 2017 and eventually assignment editor in 2018.
