Sussex Academy Green Team & Scrub Club host Earth Day event

May 27, 2025

High school students from the Sussex Academy Green Team and Scrub Club hosted the fifth annual Earth Day celebration May 2, offering elementary-aged kids time at interactive learning stations, introducing them to environmental organizations and allowing them to interact with live animals.

The student-run event, which normally takes place on Earth Day in April, was pushed later this year because the holiday fell during the students’ spring break.

“The goal is to bring awareness to the environment and to provide lessons for kids on various environmental or science-themed topics,” said Stephanie Sherman, the Green Team faculty advisor. “It’s always fun, and it’s a good community.”

While Sherman oversees the club, the students were fully in charge of planning the event and reaching out to outside vendors and organizations.

At the interactive stations, the kids made bird feeders, painted rocks, participated in an outdoor scavenger hunt, learned how carrots and other vegetables grow, and learned about the layers of the earth using cups with layers of pudding, gummy worms and cookie crumbles. They also loved holding the baby chicks, which one of the Green Team students brought in from his family’s farm.

Folks from 302 Acai provided food for attendees.

In previous years, the Green Team and Scrub Club have hosted individuals from environmental organizations like the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute; the Center for the Inland Bays; and Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids, but none were able to make it this year.
