Sussex Academy hosts volleyball play day

August 30, 2021

The Sussex Academy volleyball squad hosted a play day Aug. 28. Included in the competition were Delmarva Christian, Sussex Tech, Sussex Central, Woodbridge, Polytech, Indian River and Dover. It was a round robin-type scrimmage where semifinals were determined based on wins/point differentials for the top four teams, which were Dover, Delmarva Christian, Sussex Academy and Indian River. The Royals beat Sussex Academy and IR forfeited. Dover took home the championship.

“It was really exciting for me to watch our girls play with focus and aggression,” said Sussex Academy coach Hailee Gooch. “Our program is only seven years strong, and every year we get scrappier. This year, we are focusing heavily on the agility aspect of volleyball and mental aspect of athletics. It showed while we played. Overall, these girls are the quickest, defensively strong, and offensively smart team we’ve had come through this program. We have room for improvement in reading and serve receive, but we’re excited to conquer those challenges together.

“I think the play day was a lot of fun for all of the girls who attended; they received a lot of touches, and everything ran smoothly. We were excited to host this for our teams down here.”

Sussex Academy will open the season Thursday, Sept. 9, at Sussex Central. Delmarva Christian will open at Cape Friday, Sept. 10, while Sussex Tech travels to Hodgson to open the season Sept. 10. Indian River will kick off its season on the road at Caravel Saturday, Sept. 11.
