The Sussex Acadmey girls’ soccer team moved into the second round of the DIAA state tournament May 20, with a 3-0 victory over Conrad in Georgetown.

Seahawks junior Tayler Flaherty scored at the 12-minute mark off a pass from Catherine Brown. Flaherty reciprocated on Brown’s two goals at the 41- and 43-minute marks of the second half.

Sussex Academy outshot the Red Wolves 14-5.

Seahawks goalkeeper Grace Fiorilla made five saves, while Conrad goalie Erica Coruzzi stopped 13, many being highlight-reel stops.

“It was a great response from our group after a tough conference final loss [2-1 against Polytech],” said Sussex Academy coach RJ Dina. “We had tired legs coming into this one, it being our third game of the week. The girls stayed focused and were ready to regain form. There’s a lot of character throughout this group, and I’m more than pleased with how we performed after a tough week of matches.

“Tayler [Flaherty] and Catherine [Brown] were excellent. They’ve really developed a great relationship playing together. As we move further into the season, you’re starting to see their production increase. I think tonight was some of the highest-quality chances created. I have to give credit to Conrad’s keeper Erica Coruzzi. She was unbelievable and made some of the highest-quality saves I’ve seen at this level. We’re proud of the result tonight, but we know we have a tough test ahead of us.”

The No. 5 Seahawks (15-3) will travel to No. 4 Archmere (14-3) Thursday, May 25. Game time is 4 p.m.
