Sussex Academy wraps up winning week

Seahawks fly past Blue Jays 9-0
September 30, 2023

The Sussex Academy field hockey team has had a successful first week of fall, knocking off Polytech 5-2 Sept. 26 before picking up a shutout against divisional foe Seaford Sept. 28.

The 9-0 win over the Blue Jays puts the Seahawks above .500 at 4-3 and gives them a boost of confidence before they take on Indian River and Cape Henlopen over the next two weeks.

Sussex Academy senior Callie Short scored the first goal on an assist from sophomore Ryan Lowe. Less than a minute later, freshman Elizabeth Layton scored the Seahawks' second goal. Freshman Bailey Mears wrapped up the first-quarter scoring to give Sussex Academy a 3-0 lead.

Junior Rilyn Lehman kicked off the second-quarter scoring on Lowe’s second assist. Short gave the Seahawks a 5-0 lead during a corner, cashing in on an Ava Yenovkian pass.

“I’ve been working on my shot for a while now, and it feels good to have my shot pretty solid. I’ve scored in a lot of games on corners, and speed is important as well as knowing where the flier is coming at you,” Short said.

Roughly a minute later, Short delivered a pass to eighth-grader Logan Stiles, who was able to sneak the ball past the Seaford keeper. Four of the Seahawks’ six first-half goals came on assists.

“I think our passing game is strong, and we’ve been really connecting with that forward movement,” said coach Leah Hunsinger.

Junior Emiley Bisaha opened up the second-half scoring for the Seahawks, and freshman June Hill contributed a goal of her own. Junior Emma Campbell concluded the Seahawks’ scoring in the fourth quarter for the final 9-0 tally.

Dominating the game from whistle to whistle, Sussex Academy registered 18 shots and earned 7 corners.

The Seahawks will welcome Indian River Tuesday, Oct 3, then face Cape Henlopen Tuesday, Oct. 10, also at home.
