Sussex County residents elected PEO state officers

Philanthropic Educational Organization Delaware recently elected Deborah Kerchner president and Barbara Grant vice president. Both are members of P.E.O. Chapter L in Lewes. There are currently 11 P.E.O. chapters in Delaware.

Kerchner, a Bethany Beach resident, was initiated into P.E.O. in 1995 in Johnstown, Pa. She has served in most local chapter positions as well as on the state membership committee. As state organizer in 2016, she had the honor to participate in the initiation of her daughter during the organization of a new Delaware chapter.

Barbara Grant, a Lewes resident, was initiated into P.E.O. in 2005 in Flat Rock, N.C. She has served as president, vice president, treasurer and membership chair of local chapters since joining the international organization. She was elected to the Delaware state board in 2016. She is a former junior high school math teacher in Massapequa, N.Y., and she also taught computer programming at AT&T.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded Jan. 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in bringing women increased opportunities for higher education. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with 250,000 active members. Chapter L was organized in Lewes in May 1999.
