Sussex County Habitat for Humanity has been awarded $1 million from the FY26 Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Bill. The funding is part of the Congressionally Directed Spending project and was requested by Delaware Sen. Chris Coons.
“We are elated to receive this funding, which will provide critical assistance and allow us to continue creating access to affordable housing opportunities in Sussex County,” said Kevin Gilmore, Sussex Habitat CEO. “We thank Sen. Coons, his team, and those who saw the need for housing in our community and fought to find solutions to combat this housing crisis.”
Backing from CDS has already made a major impact on the county and Sussex Habitat’s efforts throughout the community.
Funding from 2022 and 2024 has powered Sussex Habitat in the current and future construction of 25 affordable homes in Milford, Seaford, Milton, Greenwood, Laurel, Bridgeville and more. Awarded funds in 2023 also helped Sussex Habitat purchase land that will be used for affordable housing projects in the near future.
This latest funding is expected to assist with construction of 10 to 15 houses, allowing the organization to continue serving the community and helping Sussex County residents build safe and decent homes.
“It truly cannot be understated how much of an impact this will have on Sussex County,” Gilmore said. “CDS funding has helped us build over 200 homes in our community since our organization began, and now we can start building the next 200.”
The bill was passed by Congress and signed into law by the president Feb. 3. The grant will be administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
