Sussex roads need reflectors

December 8, 2023

When I read a recent letter to the editor about headlights, specifically leaving high beams on when approaching oncoming traffic, I couldn’t help but think of another road-related issue I’d like to see addressed by DelDOT.

Specifically, I would like to emphasize the critical need for reflectors on the double yellow lines and white lines along the back roads. These markings are essential for delineating lanes and ensuring that drivers can navigate the roads safely, especially during low-light conditions or inclement weather.

I specifically noticed this major issue while driving on Cave Neck Road during a rainy night. With headlights blinding my vision, I found it difficult to see where I was on the road.

Reflectors would make driving conditions immensely better. They are invaluable aids in enhancing visibility, reducing the risk of accidents and guiding drivers along the narrow and winding roads that characterize much of Sussex County. The absence of proper road markings can lead to confusion, increased likelihood of unintentional lane departure and a higher potential for collisions.

I urge DelDOT to consider the installation of reflectors on the double yellow lines and white lines across the back roads of Sussex County. This enhancement in road safety infrastructure will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of those who call this beautiful region home and those who visit to experience its charm.

Let us work together to make Sussex County's back roads safer, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of our community without compromising their safety.
