Sussex Tech Adult Ed to expand CDL instruction

March 11, 2024

In response to the growing demand for qualified commercial driver’s license (CDL-A & B) drivers, Sussex Tech Adult Education Division has received funding to purchase additional training trucks and has added more CDL courses to begin this summer.

In 2022, as part of a statewide initiative funded by U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, a CDL training truck was purchased to allow all vocational-technical school districts in Delaware’s three counties to share the vehicle and work together to train students in the transportation and logistics sector.

After adding its first Class A CDL course in spring 2023, Sussex Tech Adult Ed was challenged with interest far outweighing its capacity to accommodate using the shared truck. Transportation industry partners also expressed the need for a specific CDL-B training component.

A proposal requesting funds for a Class A & B expansion was submitted to Sussex County legislators in December, and Sussex Tech Adult Ed was notified of the proposal acceptance this February. The funds will be used to purchase both A and B CDL training trucks, which will be used for classes beginning this summer.

Sussex Tech is a public high school that prepares Sussex County students in grades 9-12 for their future success in workforce environments, higher education and the military.
