Sussex Tech basketball rallies to beat Woodbridge

Tech moves to 6-5 on season
January 16, 2019

The Sussex Tech boys’ basketball team scored 16 straight points in the third quarter to build momentum and power to an 80-61 win over Woodbridge Jan. 15 in Georgetown.

Kevin Custis led the Ravens with 18 points, including three from behind the three-point line. Devon Reynolds added 17 including two three-pointers, while Skylar Johnson tallied 15.

“We played really flat at the beginning of the game,” said Tech coach Damon Ayers. “We told our guys we had to pick our energy level up.”

Tech took a 39-35 lead into the halftime break, but the Ravens fell behind by eight at the start of the third. The momentum switched again, and the Ravens turned on the afterburners to make their 16-point run.

“Once we got some easy transition baskets, we got momentum,” said Ayers. “Once you’ve got momentum, you can almost fall down and knock shots in. We started playing the way we were capable of playing. Hopefully we can build from this.”

“Coach told us we had to go hard,” said Reynolds. “We just stayed confident and believed in ourselves, and the outcome was that we came back. We knew we wanted to win; we couldn’t give up. We just got to get better. We can’t be satisfied with where we are.”

“We’re like a brotherhood,” said Johnson. “We are coming together as a team, and it’s amazing.”

Woodbridge senior Jamon Kane scored 27 points, while teammate Gabriel Wescott hit for 20.

Tech will travel to Hodgson Vo-Tech Saturday, Jan. 19, while the Raiders were set to host Delmar Thursday, Jan. 17.
