December 8, 2014

High school basketball launched into a new season Friday night with fill-tilt, full-house rivalry action. Sussex Tech battled Cape Henlopen in a Henlopen Conference game to start the season.

The varsity game was Cape chasing its tail from the first quarter when the Ravens jumped out to a 17-9 advantage on the way to a 69-60 victory.

“Can I say we were really bad and really good in the same game?" asked Cape coach Steve Re as Sussex Tech fans stormed the court in celebration.  “I really can’t be mad at our guys.  “We started four guys who didn’t start last year including a freshman, and I thought they played well under the bright lights. We got back in it twice but just couldn’t bury big shots.”

Sussex Tech flashed an array of talent with four players in double figures: Shi’wuan Sykes 18, Brandon Palmer 13, William Ball 12 and Jamont Mathews 10.

“Tech is athletic with a lot of depth, ”Re said. "They will be a tough out for anyone.”

Cape got on track in the second quarter, outscoring the Ravens 21-15 to trail 32-30 at halftime.

Cape was paced in the game by Ryan Thornburg with 17 points including five from 3 land, William Yeates with 12 and Jordan Howell 11.

The final minute of action with the Ravens leading 65-60, Cape pressured the ball and got the turnover followed by a clean look beyond the arc from Ryan Thornburg, but it didn’t drop, and the Ravens converted four free throws  for the final score of  69-60.

The Ravens won the JV game in overtime 48-40 and also won the freshman game 52-25.

Cape will host Smyrna Tuesday, Dec. 9, with varsity action beginning at 7:15. The Eagles  under new coach Andrew Mears lost their season opener to Caesar Rodney 54-51.

Sussex Tech will host Dover Tuesday night; it will be the season opener for the Senators.

Last season when the Vikings scored at least 60 points they had a record of 10-2. They wound up with a 15-9 season which ended in a 64-55 loss to St. Georges. Cape was 7-2 on its home court last season.
