Sussex Tech boys’ basketball goes 1-1 at Governor’s Challenge

January 2, 2023

The Sussex Tech boys’ basketball team defeated Cambridge South Dorchester 65-49 Dec. 30 in the final game of the Governor’s Challenge at Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Md. The Ravens had fallen earlier in the tournament to Easton 49-35.

Junior Isaiah Ayers and sophomore Kyle Thompson led the Ravens with 19 points each. Senior Donald Saintphard added 11.

The quick Cambridge squad started out hot and took a 15-7 lead into the second quarter, but the Ravens took to the air, outscoring Cambridge 28-18, and finished off the Vikings with a 30-16 second half to garner the 16-point win.

“We played hard and with a purpose,” said Ravens head coach Damon Ayers. “Isaiah, Kyle and Donald led the charge offensively, but a total team effort defensively led to some easy transition baskets which sparked our offense. Once we got the lead, we were able to do some things differently on the defensive end, and it enabled us to build on our lead.”

The 2-4 Ravens travel to Caesar Rodney, Tuesday, Jan. 3, to face the 1-6 Riders in a Henlopen North matchup.
