Sussex would approve emperor’s new clothes

December 16, 2025

It's Tuesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. I am returning to Lewes from an appointment in Georgetown. I am traveling east on Route 9 toward Lewes. As I approach the intersection of Route 9 and Route 1, traffic heading east is backed up from the Route 1 intersection all the way back to Redner's supermarket. It is not resort season or rush hour, and in the middle of a weekday. More and more this scenario is repeated throughout southern Sussex County. And yet one of the Sussex County Council members was quoted in the Gazette last month indicating that he thought the traffic was fine and without problems in this region. He is joined by the Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission and DelDOT engineers, all of whom have endorsed the massive developments approaching Route 9. These are developments that propose to add 10,000 or more cars to Route 9 and southern Sussex County highways. Without a doubt, this is a group that would collectively approve of the emperor's new clothes.
