Sylvia Mae Clancy, loved family, friends

Sylvia Mae Clancy, 85, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 24, 2011, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Sparta, N.C. March 17, 1926. She was the daughter of Quincy and Verlyn Edwards. She moved to Florida where she met her husband and love of her life, Lt. Col. John T. Clancy USAF(Ret). They married Sept. 17, 1949. After years of military travel they settled in Delaware with their family. Her husband passed away in 1983.

She is survived by her children, Mary (Cathy) McLaughlin and her husband Daniel, Patricia Bull and her husband David, John Clancy and his partner Mary Sica, Elizabeth Ruff and her husband Michael and Michelle Okavage and her husband Todd; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Wilma Franklin, Nellie Daly and Elva Fagan. She was preceded in death by her brothers Edmond and Raymond Edwards and her sisters Berkie Brown and Gean Hopkins-Barnard.

She enjoyed cooking, painting, bowling, gardening and was an avid sports fan. But her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and friends. She was a member of Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She enjoyed summers at the beach in Lewes and family reunions in Sparta.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held Monday, March 28, from 6 to 8 pm at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 29, at Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington. Interment will immediately follow at All Saints’ Cemetery Chapel, Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.
