Takács String Quartet to perform March 18 concert in Lewes

Coastal Concerts will present the Takács String Quartet at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 18, in Bethel United Methodist Church Hall, Fourth and Market streets, Lewes.

The concert will be preceded at 1 p.m. by Lani Spahr’s Performance Insights.

The world-renowned quartet is now in its 48th season, which began with a tour of Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea. One of two newly released CDs for Hyperion Records features the first recording of an extraordinary new work, “Les Six Rencontres,” written for the Takács by celebrated pianist Sir Stephen Hough, who performed a solo concert before a Coastal Concerts audience in 2011.

The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest by Gabor Takács-Nagy, Károly Schranz, Gabor Ormai and András Fejér, while all four were students.

Currently based at the University of Colorado in Boulder, the quartet now comprises Edward Dusinberre (violin), Harumi Rhodes (violin), Richard O’Neill (viola) and original member András Fejér (cello). It is currently based at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The program for the upcoming concert consists of three string quartets: Benjamin Britton’s “No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25”; Béla Bartók’s “No. 6 in D Minor, Sz. 114”; and Antonin Dvorák’s “No. 13 in G Major, Op. 106.”
