Take time to enjoy art and gardens
Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail residents put their creativity on display
September 11, 2020
Several Lewes residents whose yards back up to the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail go out of their way to plant gardens and add artwork to the delight of cyclists and walkers who frequent the trail.
Trail swag ranges from a little creepy, to artistic, to whimsical and even inspirational. Phase 1 of the popular trail from Gills Neck Road to Savannah Road in Lewes opened in October 2016 and Phase 2 from Savannah Road to Log Cabin Hill Road opened in June 2019. This summer, Delaware Department of Transportation officials added an extension to Route 9. Work is scheduled to begin soon in Georgetown on the 17-mile trail, which was a railroad track line.

Words such as “creepy” and “strange” are used by trail users as they pass by this backyard in the Donovan Smith Manufactured Home Park just past Savannah Road. Even so, it does bring smiles to passersby.

A sign near the Monroe Avenue intersection offers a glimpse at how far away you are from many locations, including Key West, Fla.
