I need to express my thanks to an unknown neighbor.
Last week, I launched a 14-foot skiff in Red Mill Pond, and for reasons too boneheaded and embarrassing to disclose, it got away from me. The wind was blowing it faster than I can swim.
By the time I got into a bathing suit and got back to the dock, it was out of sight. I got in the car and drove down toward the highway where it was headed, but I could not find it.
When I came home, there she was, tied up at my landing! I had put two cold beers in a bucket in the boat, and they were still there.
Thanks to the kind souls who brought the boat back. It is a privilege to have such neighbors. I would have been happy to share the beers, and if you come by, there is one waiting for you.
