Thompson Island recognized as a Cape Community Champion

April 10, 2026

Cape Henlopen High School recently recognized Thompson Island Brewing Company restaurant as its Community Champion for the month of March during the Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education Meeting held March 26.

The recognition highlights the strong and effective partnership between Thompson Island and the Cape High Vocational Program that began in 2023. Through this collaboration, Cape High students are provided with meaningful, hands-on work experiences twice a week in a real-world setting.

While on site at the restaurant, students take part in a variety of responsibilities that help support daily restaurant operations. Their tasks include filling salt and pepper shakers, stocking ice bins throughout the restaurant, setting up tables, wiping menus and flight holders, washing windows, vacuuming, washing dishes and assisting with overall cleanliness and organization. These experiences not only build practical job skills, but also foster confidence, responsibility and teamwork among students.

In addition to providing valuable work opportunities, Thompson Island demonstrates its appreciation by treating students to a meal and beverage following their work, further reinforcing a welcoming and supportive environment.

“The partnership with Thompson Island has created incredible opportunities for our students to learn and grow,” said Kiersten Sponaugle, special education teacher. “We are grateful for their continued support and commitment to helping our students gain real-world experience.”

Cape Henlopen High School extends sincere thanks to Thompson Island for its ongoing partnership and dedication to student success. School officials look forward to continuing this meaningful collaboration for years to come.
