A time of creativity and heart

December 19, 2025

As we near Christmas and are in the midst of Chanukah, the Cape Region has once again shown why the holiday season feels especially meaningful here. From festive parades and house tours to community events that bring neighbors together, our towns embrace the spirit of the season with warmth, creativity and heart.

What makes the holidays in the Cape Region so special is that they’re about more than celebration; they're also about generosity. Throughout the season, countless fundraisers, food drives and toy collections reflect a community whose members look out for one another. From local nonprofits to national efforts like Toys for Tots, residents, businesses and organizations step up to ensure that families and children in need can experience the joy of the holidays.

Few things capture the spirit of the season better than the Share Your Christmas event hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, Sussex County Lodge 2. This year, Lodge 2 sponsored two families who experienced unfortunate medical crises and would not have been able to give their children anything under the tree for Christmas morning. FOP Charity Event Coordinator Robert J. Schappert summarized the impact perfectly: “The tears of gratitude and the smiles on their faces said it all.”

This year also marked a milestone for the Cape Gazette. For the first time, our staff had the opportunity to participate in both the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach Christmas parades. These events gave our staff a unique, firsthand look at the magic created by our communities – the cheers from bundled-up spectators, the laughter of children and the shared joy that stretches from one end of the route to the other. Much like the Cape Gazette’s float made of recycled newspapers, the parades also showcase the creativity of the Cape Region’s residents, students, businesses and nonprofits.

As we celebrate the Christmas and holiday season, we thank the volunteers, organizers, donors and residents who give their time, resources and spirit so generously.
