My wife, Sonie, and I attended an art gallery opening for CAMP Rehoboth co-founder Murray Archibald on the eve of this year’s Rehoboth Beach elections. Our first such outing in a while, we were greeted by many old friends; Fay Jacobs and Bonnie, even Tony Burns had to get our picture.
Curiously, both events reminded me of one of the perennial campaign issues that came up again this year, character of the community. For years, this old saw has focused on the loss of the little, old cottages and how they’re being replaced by multistory “hotels.” Sure, it’s a concern, but what’s more significant is the vibrant social scene – a diverse and positive mix of people – that lights up the city. That attracts visitors, new businesses, home buyers and other investors. It’s the people who make our city so appealing; that’s the real character of the community.
Unfortunately, there was a dark side to this year’s election campaign, one that could threaten the character of the community I just described. Significantly, it wasn’t necessarily the candidates. It was divisive attacks, behind-the-scenes manipulation with deceptions. It was cruel and hateful. It was out of character. It could tear the community apart.
Maybe the outcome of the voting will bring about a more constructive attitude. Instead of vengeful people who sow discord, recognition that this is a community with common, positive characteristics. People who want to make the character of the community better.
By the way, Murray’s show is spectacular. Go see it!
