Tony Koones, real estate developer

August 26, 2015

Tony Koones, 79, husband, stepfather, uncle and great friend to so many, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 in Rehoboth Beach.

A lifelong resident of Washington, D.C. and Rehoboth Beach, Tony was the loving son of Charles Carr Koones and Violet Ledig Koones; the stepson of Blix Koones; the brother of the late Charles K. Koones III; and the brother-in-law of the late Jane Crowley Koones.

He attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and was a 1953 graduate of Georgetown Prep, where he was a standout on the football team. Tony graduated in 1957 from Cornell University and received his masters of business administration from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business in 1959.

Tony was a successful real estate developer, banker and entrepreneur in the Washington area. He was a senior executive with Mid-City Financial Corporation before launching American Housing Inc. He then assumed ownership of Friendship Savings & Loan and co-founded Victoria Financial. He developed many Washington area projects, including Tiber Island.

Tony is survived by Barbara, his devoted wife of 22 years. While they had known each other for years, they fell in love later in life and their marriage was filled with love and laughter. Together they raised Barbara’s daughter, Tracy Phillips, and love defined their homes in Potomac, Md. and Rehoboth Beach. In addition to his wife and stepdaughter, Tony leaves behind his nieces and nephew, Kristina Veirs, Karen Callahan, Katie Sheats, Suzanne Egan, Charles Koones and Ginge Cabrera, whom he viewed as his own children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 31, at noon, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach. Interment will follow services at 1 p.m., at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach.

Friends may call Sunday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.
