Top Hobie Cat sailors take on Delaware Bay

Rough seas postpone racing on Day 3 of regatta
September 24, 2014

Rough waves driven by high winds forced postponement of the third day of racing in the 44th annual Hobie 16 Open North American Championships in Lewes.

The first boat that tried to get out in the Delaware Bay on Sept. 24 capsized; it didn't take long for race officials to cancel racing pending improved weather conditions.

After two days and five races, Jason Hess and Irene Abascal of Guatemala are in first place followed by Mark Modderman sailing with his daughter, Grace Modderman, from Sandy Hook Bay (N.J.) Catamaran Club and Dan Borg and Lianna Giovanda from Toronto, Canada, in a tie for second place.

The event - a 2015 Pan American Games qualifier – is being hosted by the Lewes Yacht Club.

Race officials were optimistic that the front would pass and racing would continue Sept. 25 and Sept. 26.
