A month-long toy and clothing drive launched by Lewes teen Alissa Swann has netted nearly 300 toys and $400 for local organizations.

As a Sussex Academy junior, Alissa chose to run the donation drive, called Toys for Joy, as a class project. For the month of April, donors dropped off new toys, books, clothing, baby items and stuffed animals at Kids’ Ketch in Lewes, where Alissa works.

By the end of April, Alissa had collected 296 toys and $400, which she split evenly into donations for What is Your Voice women’s and children’s shelter, and Food Bank of Delaware in Milford.

“It was an amazing experience to give back to the community, and the faces of the people I gave the toys to made it all worth it,” Alissa said.
