Turtlefest cut short by rain

October 14, 2021

The inaugural Turtlefest, held at Grain on the Rocks in Lewes, was cut short Oct. 10 when wind and rain moved in after the first performance by the Wilmington-based band Reverse Giraffe.

Turtlefest was a benefit concert for the family of Steven Alawishus Johnson, who died recently, leaving behind his wife who was expecting their first child two weeks later. The event was named for Johnson’s love of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and several members of the crowd wore T-shirts bearing the Turtles’ image and Reverse Giraffe played its version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song.

The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park and Johnson’s friends worked with Grain to create a shirt that raised money for Johnson’s family.

Jason Meisner, general manager of Grain on the Rocks, said the restaurant is working to organize another benefit concert in the spring.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Johnson’s family at gofundme.com/f/skhat-in-loving-memory-of-steve-johnson
