A chicken chase race with no chicken, is that ironic or just plain odd? The University of Delaware’s fourth annual Chicken Chase 5K shuffled the field of runners from The Starboard in Dewey Beach over the Silver Lake Bridge in Rehoboth Beach June 14, before making a hard right up to the Boardwalk for the turnaround.
Josh Hayman, 32, of Newark was one mile ahead of half of the 187 runners at the two-mile mark. And that is the nature of the sport of road racing. All abilities run the same course post to paddock.
Kyle Brightbill, 50, of Frankford was second overall and the masters champion in 18:20. Arianna Purtell, 21, of Magnolia was first female in 21:33. Renee Baffone, 48, of Hockessin took the overall female masters title in 24:18.
Kenny Terhune, 45, of Miilton ran 23:38, while his daughter Bree, 14, clocked a time of 24:34.
A total of 41 runners ran the 5K in a sub-8-minute mile pace.
April Anderson, 80, won the spring chicken category, winning the 70-99 age group in 43:14. The male 70-79 age group saw four free-ranging chickens, led by Victor Yzaguirre, 70, in 25:53; John Walters, 72, in 29:21; Jerry Tharp, 79, in 39:32; Kevin Malloy, 76, in 50:35.
The little biddies in the race were impressive, with Harper Baker, 12, of Fallston, Md., winning the 13-and-under female age group in 22:37. Joel Baker, 51, won the male 50-59 in the same time of 22:37.
Miller Peichert, 13, of Baltimore won the male 13-and-under age group in 26:24.
The next Races2Run race at the beach is the 23rd annual Dewey Beach Patrol 5K at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, June 22, at Northbeach.
