UNICO supports Immanuel Shelter with $1,000 grant

September 23, 2018

At the recent UNICO National Convention held in Delray Beach, Fla., UNICO awarded a grant requested by the Immanuel Shelter in Nassau.

The $1,000 check was presented to Executive Director Meghan Fox and nurse/volunteer Rhona Prescott by Joan Boraski, UNICO Rehoboth Area Outreach/Donations Committee chair, at the site of the future permanent home of the Immanuel Shelter.

The grant was requested by Fox to fund food programs such as evening snacks and a morning continental breakfast.

The award was given via the UNICO Torraco Food Bank and Shelter Fund, which aims to help the hungry and provide shelter for those homeless or indigent through community-established food/shelter programs.

Immanuel operates a Code Purple Shelter open each winter from 4 p.m. to 7:45 a.m., December to April, offering guests a safe place to sleep, shower, do wash and receive a home-cooked meal provided by volunteers from community organizations and churches.

Its Chase the Chill program provides scarves, gloves, hats, etc., and Beat the Heat offers sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, and hats in cooperation with the local YMCA.

Immanuel Shelter is working toward the purchase of an historic church building and property in Nassau to allow operations on an annual basis. This project will need renovations, permits and supplies. Financial and material donations are gratefully accepted. Immanuel Shelter is a 501c3 organization, and all donations are tax deductible.
