Unique Minds Changing Lives now open near Lewes

Organization provides services, support to low-income families

Officials celebrated the grand opening of Unique Minds Changing Lives near Lewes Nov. 15.

The nonprofit organization was established in May and is designed to help low-income families and individuals by providing educational and financial training and support, as well as work experience opportunities for youth and seniors.

Helena Gibbs, president of Unique Minds Changing Lives, said the organization’s mission is to change the lives of low-income individuals and families residing in Sussex County who have fallen into hardship.

Many programs and services will be available, Gibbs said, including financial literacy and credit repair workshops, home ownership seminars, parenting classes, mentoring and tutoring programs, adult computer training and disaster relief.

Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement President and CEO Sheila Bravo, who was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, said Unique Minds Changing Lives was formed by the community for the community, and that the community would help the nonprofit continue beyond today and into the future.  

Unique Minds Changing Lives will also partner with agencies to offer support groups to help individuals deal with surviving trauma and abuse, and alcohol and drug addiction recovery.

The organization has set a goal to feed 300 people a month through its services. A weekly feeding program is open five days a week from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a monthly food distribution occurs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the fourth Friday of every month, and emergency food is distributed as needed. Individuals will also have emergency access to a clothes pantry.
