Unitarian Universalists host a 'Journey to Neverland'
Themed as a Journey to Neverland, the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware recently hosted their annual auction for the first time at the new sanctuary on Lewes-Georgetown Highway.
The Peter Pan-inspired theme pulled in dozens of costumed members of the church and community for the annual auction, which is their largest fundraiser of the year.
Dressed as Peter Pan, UUSD member Paul Barnette said the costume party and fundraiser is a fun way to support the church.
“We find it’s a great way to meet people outside Sunday morning,” Barnette said. “This is our largest fundraiser. Last year we raised more than $16,000, and we hope to beat that goal this year.”
The auction features donations from church members and local retailers including gift cards, paintings, sculpture, gym memberships and themed meals, and parties from many members.
Rehoboth resident Sally Crouch has been a UUSD member since 2007 and said although she didn’t have time to dress up this year, she always enjoys the auction.
Crouch brought a friend who wasn’t a member of her church just to enjoy the food, drinks and fun at their auction.
“Its a lot of fun and we raise a lot of money,” she said.
The auction was open to the community outside their 124-member all-inclusive church, and the sanctuary filled fast with donations and costumed collaborators.
“The UUSD encourages everyone to find their own way of spirituality,” Crouch said. “Christian, Buddhist, Hindu: the best of all religions in a beautiful new sanctuary.”
