Unitarians to share journey through Transylvania Aug. 24
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware, an inclusive religious community, welcomes all to a special service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 24. In Over the Hills and Far Away, the Rev. D. Michael Smith and members of the UUSD congregation will kick off the presentation about their trip to Transylvania. Smith talks about his own personal spiritual reflection and the place in history Unitarianism has, as well as how different the idea of religion is in this place of the origin of Unitarianism.
The public is also invited to the presentation following the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the journey through Hungary and Romania to visit its people and learn about the roots of Unitarianism.
Those who attend will look into the real-life world of the Transylvania they heard about in fairy tales. Locations include Budapest; Sibiu, European Capital of Culture, 2007; and Sighisoara, purported birthplace of Dracula. They will see art nouveau architecture and medieval fortress towns, learn a little history and spend time in the village of Tordatur, where the partnership church of UUSD is located.
The intrepid travelers will share their experiences through photos, music and discussion, with fabulous Hungarian food to sample. Also the generous women of the Tordatur Unitarian Congregation gifted UUSD with several handmade traditional Hungarian embroidered linens which members will be selling at the presentation for the benefit of the UUSD capital campaign.
UUSD has been an active member of the local community for over 15 years providing a liberal spiritual home for people of free faith in support of its mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world. Visitors are welcome to attend Sunday services at 10 a.m.; child care is available.
