United Way, Burris Logistics donate new bikes to children

First State Community Action Freedom School scholars surprised by gift
August 18, 2021

Ten children from First State Community Action Agency’s Freedom School were surprised Aug. 6 when they received new bikes donated by United Way of Delaware and Burris Logistics.

FSCAA Executive Director Bernice Edwards said it was exciting that Burris Logistics and United Way thought of the Freedom School scholars.

“Freedom School has been phenomenal,” Edwards said. “We hope the program will continue.”

In February, FSCAA announced it received an $80,000 grant from the United Way of Delaware to implement the summer Freedom School, which was the first of its kind in Sussex County.

Freedom Schools were launched in the South in the 1960s to empower and educate African Americans in their fight to achieve social, political and economic equality. They exist today as summer literacy youth programs through the Children’s Defense Fund.
