Update: Body retrieved from Broadkill River in Milton
Milton Fire Department water rescue personnel pulled the body of a white male from the waters of the Broadkill River about 1:30 p.m., Nov. 8. Milton Police Capt. John Cornwell said the deceased is believed to have been 40 to 50 years old.
Police Chief William Phillips said a person who was visiting Milton Memorial Park saw the corpse floating in the water and notified police. "It looked like a mannequin at first," Phillips said.
Police found the body in the river, near the gazebo in Milton Memorial Park, and notified Milton Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control as well as Delaware State Police Troop 4 Major Crimes, who all responded.
Phillips said no one has recently been reported missing in Milton. The body has been turned over to the Office of the Medical Examiner, whose personnel arrived on the scene shortly after the body was discovered. The investigation is pending an autopsy and a positive identification of the body, Cornwell said.
Jill Fredel, director of communications for Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, said in an email Nov. 9, the Medical Examiner's Office had not positively identified the man. "Cause and manner of death are pending further forensic analysis," Fredel said.
