UUSD breaks ground for new home near Lewes
Joy and blessings were abundant Nov. 9 as the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware moved one step closer to a long-held dream of a permanent home as ground was broken for a new sanctuary on its recently purchased property on Route 9 in Lewes.
UUSD started as a small group meeting on the beach in 1998 and has met in various rented locations since that memorable beginning. It has grown substantially and has formed a rich spiritual community built on a strong social justice foundation.
Deanna Duby, UUSD Board of Trustees president, summed up the hopes and vision of the congregation for their new home when she said, “In this new location, my hope is that we will expand our outreach to those in need of our support and our message that diversity is a good thing; that every person has worth and dignity; that justice, equity and compassion are real and not just words; that the spirit of life is vibrant and truly caring, and that we are all a part of an interdependent web of existence.”
Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2015, and the congregation is already planning expanded programs and activities that support its mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world.
Unitarian Universalism is a religious tradition based on seven principles valuing the worth and dignity of every person and that UUs provide a religious home for all traditions. Members' relationships with one another, with diverse peoples, races and nations should be governed by justice, equity, and compassion.
