UUSD to host Power of Myth course starting March 5
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware and Dr. Len Bowman will conduct a six-week course on The Power of Myth. Course participants will view and then discuss six interviews with mythologist Joseph Campbell by award-winning journalist Bill Moyers. The course will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. starting Thursday, March 5, at the UUSD, 33739 Marsh Road in Lewes.
Campbell was first and foremost a scholar of world mythological traditions. Yet his work has continued to resonate in the creative arts and in personal spiritual journeys. Among those who acknowledge a debt to him are George Lucas, creator of "Star Wars"; Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead; and sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Campbell also recognized how closely mythology is linked to psychological archetypes identified by C. G. Jung, so the study of mythology can help people recognize their shadows, hidden desires and possibilities that may be expressed in dreams and that may inspire creativity.
The course content will be based on these video segments: The Hero’s Adventure; The Message of the Myth; The First Storytellers; Sacrifice and Bliss, Love and the Goddess, and Masks of Eternity.
Bowman has taught philosophy and religion for over 30 years, and he currently teaches in the master of liberal arts program of Johns Hopkins University. Bowman’s undergraduate major is philosophy. He holds an MA in English literature from the University of Detroit and a PhD in religion and literature from Fordham University.
A one-time $10 donation is requested for the course. No preregistration is needed. Proceeds will support the mission of the UUSD to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world.
