UUSD members march in support of Black Lives Matter movement
The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware, a congregation located in Lewes, held a healing circle Dec. 7 followed by a peaceful march to Route 1 and Marsh Road where they stood on the side of love to show support for the strife-torn communities of Ferguson, Staten Island, and Cleveland, and affirm the message that black lives matter. Undaunted by the cold and wind, the group stood by the highway with their placards for almost an hour before marching back to UUSD.
Organizer Don Peterson, chair of the congregation’s Social & Environmental Justice Committee, said, “We came together to express our grief and anger at the deaths of too many young black men at the hands of the police, and to express our hope that we as a nation can end the racism that is the cause of so much pain. We also wanted to let people in our local community know that the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will always take a stand against these injustices.”
Unitarian Universalism is a religious tradition based on seven principles valuing the worth and dignity of every person. UUs provide a religious home for all traditions. They believe that relationships with one another, with diverse peoples, races and nations should be governed by justice, equity, and compassion. Standing on the Side of Love is a national initiative sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association which harnesses the power of love to stop oppression.
