Vernon Eugene Bingham, gernerous man
Vernon Eugene Bingham entered into rest Friday, March 4, 2022, after a 22-year long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born April 24, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the late Vernon and Mildred Bingham.
He grew up adjacent to Emigration Canyon, scrambling in the hills and fishing in the creek throughout his childhood, in a house constructed by his father and mother. The family grew, adding his siblings Leslie and Brent along the way. A highlight that many spoke of later was the Jeep rides throughout the canyon with him and his siblings. During this time in his life, he learned many lessons that cannot be taught in school. The family moved to Michigan when he was around 16, where he graduated from Groves High School in 1968. The family welcomed their youngest sibling, Dave Bingham in 1965. From there he and his sister, Leslie, moved back to Utah where he attended Westminster College. He was married and through his first marriage, he was blessed with the birth of his daughter, Becky Bingham on May 8, 1972.
His life’s work was in the restaurant industry, which he genuinely enjoyed. He was employed by HMS Host Marriott for 33 years in different capacities including district manager and Travel Plazas New Jersey as a manager at both the Delaware House and Chesapeake House. His career culminated and brought his skills to bear as general manager of the Maryland House Travel Plaza. He retired from HMS in 2012. He was beloved by his employees who loved working for him; a lesson learned, and an example set by his father, Vernon Sr.
Vern was always generous. For example, when he realized that he was no longer able to enjoy the gifts he bought for himself, such as his Harley, he was selfless enough to give them away. Vern loved spending time by the ocean, taking strolls on the boardwalk, and especially taking his daughter on these outings. He later met the love of his life, Janet, who took care of him in a time of great need. She was able to and willing to assist him after a significant medical event. Because they were previously acquainted, she was there when he needed her. She saw and understood him as a compassionate man, a caring man, one who not only showed caring and compassion for his daughter but also all those who entered his life. She found in him something wonderful and as such, they married shortly after. They took up their home in Milton, where Vern lived out the rest of his days with his loving and supportive wife and care companion.
Those going before him and accepting him into loving arms are his father and mother, Vernon and Midred Bingham; his nephew Drake Lenz; and all other family members who have been laid to rest. He is survived by his wife, Janet Bingham; his daughter, Becky Bingham; and his siblings, Leslie G. Bingham Lenz and her husband Jim, Brent Bingham and wife Lisa, Dave Bingham and his wife Robyn; his stepsons, John and Josh White; his nieces and nephews, Robin, Megan, Elena, Graham, Maya, and Tom, as well as his great-nieces and -nephews, Kiersen, Emree, Liam, Jack, Reagan, Kolby, and Kai.
Final care for Mr. Bingham is entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Vern’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Donation Processing, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014, (michaeljfox.org).
