Coastal Concerts and Curtis on Tour will present a performance by the Viano String Quartet and violist Roberto Díaz at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, in the Bethel United Methodist Church Hall, Fourth and Market streets, Lewes.
The concert will be preceded at 1 p.m. by a presentation of Lani Spahr’s Performance Insights.
Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, the Viano String Quartet is the current Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. First-prize winner of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the group has performed in venues worldwide and has been praised for its huge range of dynamics, massive sound and spontaneity.
Díaz, a violist of international reputation, is president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, following in the footsteps of renowned soloist/directors such as Josef Hofmann, Efrem Zimbalist and Rudolf Serkin. As a teacher of viola at Curtis and former principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Díaz has had a significant impact on American musical life and continues to do so in his dual roles as performer and educator.
The program for the Feb. 18 concert consists of compositions of three masters: quartets by Mozart and Bartok, and a quintet by Brahms.
