VIDEO: Smooth sailing with Cape Water Taxi

Local business celebrates five years on the water
August 4, 2017

Battling traffic on a congested Route 1 in the summer isn't the only way to access the sights and sounds of Delaware's beaches.

Since 2012, Cape Water Tours and Taxi has skipped the gridlock, offering locals and tourists a water-bound route from Lewes to Dewey Beach. The 54-foot-long pontoon boat also takes visitors on tours highlighting the marine life found along the shore, live music cruises, history tours and more. Tour operators allow guests to bring food and drinks onboard as well.

At $10 to $40, depending on the type of tour, the water taxi also offers guests a chance to check out inland areas like the Broadkill River, and special events such as the Cape Region's Fourth of July fireworks displays.

“Over the course of the last six seasons, we've morphed into a tour boat operator as opposed to a water taxi,” said owner David Green. “Although we still do run to Dewey on Friday nights. We've got to try to keep that heritage alive.”

Most tours leave from Lewes Fisherman's Wharf on Anglers Road, although some tours depart from the Lewes Ferry Terminal on Cape Henlopen Drive. For more, go to www.capewatertaxi.com.
