Vikings run clock on Jaguars 56-0
Cape Henlopen football beat the visiting “Jagwires” of Washington High 56-0 Oct. 26 after leading 49-0 at halftime.
Justin Lopez scored on touchdown runs of 24 and 74 yards, while Andre Flowers scored on a 21-yard touchdown. Juan Saez scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards.
The last three scores came from Cody Dmiterchik off an 8-yard run, followed by Bill Gibbs with a run of 6 yards and Mike Williams a run of 20 yards.
David Cespedes, filling in for injured Miguel Merino, was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points, while Gibbs kicked point number 49.
“Lost in all of this is two winning seasons in a row, ” said coach Bill Collick after the game. "Last year, we broke a 10-year streak of losing seasons with an 8-2 record, and this year we’re back, so we feel pretty good about consistency.”
Cape was coming off a flat fourth quarter against Sussex Central the previous week when the Vikings saw a 7-0 lead with nine minutes remaining blow up in their collective faces for a strange 28-7 loss.
“Trust me, we have worked on some things, talked straight to some people and we don’t hesitate to bring people along and get them on the field,” Collick said. “It’s kind of funny; we took a non-winning team and now we have people talking about who should play where and how much they should play.”
Collick fully understands that the better the team, the more people outside the fence who want to coach them.
“Hey, we’ve got to go up and play CR next week, which is a challenge and an opportunity," he said. "This season is far from over and it’s no time to talk about playoffs, only time to talk about Caesar Rodney.”
