VIA volunteers help staff Rehoboth Boardwalk Information Kiosk

September 1, 2019

This summer, a team of Village Improvement Association volunteers staffed the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Information Kiosk on Mondays and Tuesdays, as they have for the past nine years.

The City of Rehoboth Beach operates the booth from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. More than 55 VIA volunteers logged over 300 hours to keep the information flowing to beach visitors.

Vacationers from all over the country and world flock to this beach and often call on the kiosk staff to answer their questions. The kiosk staff guides visitors to restrooms and first aid assistance, to help finding lost children and lost possessions, and to the hundreds of shops, restaurants, attractions and hotels that make up the resort’s abundant resources and amenities.

Information is available at the kiosk about the city’s 200 shops, galleries and spas, and 100-plus food establishments; hotel and bed-and-breakfast locations; real estate offices; church services; public transportation; and bike and hiking trails. Maps, coupon books, bus schedules and more are also available. Area businesses count on kiosk staffers to deliver accurate and pertinent information with a smile.

Gracious assistance from local residents helps maintain Rehoboth Beach’s reputation as an exciting and welcoming place for all, and keeps vacationers returning year after year.

This summer, VIA volunteers helped a famished soon-to-be mother locate the nearest place to get breakfast - fast. They also located a lost cellphone and gave recommendations to a young couple looking for an inexpensive adventure and dinner. The volunteers told the 20-somethings about the park-and-ride, which was convenient and inexpensive. They provided them with a bus schedule and local maps, and pointed out some of the eateries along the route. It is all in a typical day’s work at the Boardwalk kiosk.

Visitors’ questions are usually serious but sometimes tongue-in-cheek: queries on “Which ocean is this, Atlantic or Pacific?” or “When do the dolphins swim by?” (most often in the morning if they decide to show themselves at all, the VIA sources say) are some fun examples.
