Waitlist open for in-person instruction at Cape schools

Parents to request change by Nov. 16; switch possible if space permits
November 6, 2020

With the first marking period set to end Nov. 18, Cape district parents wanting to change their child’s current learning model can contact schools by Nov. 16 to be placed on a waiting list.

Since the beginning of the school year, elementary students have attended either completely in person or remote. Middle and high school students have attended completely remote or hybrid, in which they are in school two days a week and work from home independently or via Zoom three days a week.

These options will continue for the second marking period, and changes will be considered if space permits, officials said.

All elementary schools currently have a wait list, Assistant Superintendent Jenny Nauman said, and Love Creek Elementary has the biggest wait list because of the number of students enrolled there overall.

Middle schools also have wait lists, but some space is available at each school in each grade. Cape High does not have a waiting list and has been able to be fluid in cohort changes, Nauman said.

“As a district, we want as many students back as possible while following the governor’s orders and Delaware Public Health guidelines, and focusing on student and staff safety,” Nauman said. “We cannot relax any of our health and safety precautions.”

If space is available, new in-person students will begin attending Monday, Nov. 30, Nauman said. To request a change, parents of high school students are asked to contact their child’s guidance counselor, and parents of students in all other schools are asked to contact the school office or email the school principal.

Parents who do not want to make any changes to their child’s learning model do not have to contact the school, Nauman said.
