Water advisory issued in Dewey Beach

Water tests in part of Dewey Beach show bacteria levels above the recreational water quality standard.

A water quality advisory has been issued for Dewey Beach at Dagsworthy Street. Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control officials say the bacteria most likely originates from wildlife sources and increased rainfall or from waves that result in indicator bacteria washing into the near shore waters. A water quality sample has been taken on Dagsworthy and the advisory will be lifted once indicator bacteria levels are within the recreational water quality limits.

DNREC officials say the testing program splits Dewey Beach into two segments. The Dewey Beach-Dagsworthy advisory issued June 20 is for beaches from Bellevue Street south to Collins Street. The northern beaches in Dewey, from Bellevue north to the Dewey Beach town limits, are not included in the advisory.
