Water main break closes McKinley Avenue in Dewey

November 13, 2019

McKinley Avenue in Dewey is closed after a Nov. 11 water main break may have undermined the roadway due to the amount of water flushed from the line, Delaware Department of Transportation officials said.

A detour is posted, and 911 and emergency response systems have been notified, DelDOT official George Pierce said.

DelDOT planned to rectify and reopen the street by week’s end, but 30-degree temperatures have delayed excavating and repaving the area until Nov. 18-20, Pierce said.

Pierce said the break occurred when a subcontractor struck a water line while performing a conduit bore Nov. 11.

“The subcontractor was following proper protocol, but unfortunately, occasionally incidents like this occur,” Pierce said.
