Wayne Kirklin, seasoned traveler
Wayne Kirklin ended his stay on Earth Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022. He was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Wilmington, to the late Vernus (Fullhart) Kirklin and the late Wayne Kirklin.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Marian (Campbell) Kirklin; a sister; and three children: Jim of Scotts Valley, Calif., Rob of West Hartford, Conn., and Julie of New Boston, N.H. Also surviving are five grandchildren.
Wayne was a member of the first graduating class of Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, and was graduated from the University of Delaware where he held several campus offices and played varsity lacrosse.
After time in the U.S. Army, he spent the next 22 years as a banker. He started as a trainee with a big New York City bank (receiving an MBA from New York University and a diploma from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking) and progressed to become president of a smaller community bank. During that time, he lived in New York City, western Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
After several years as a stockbroker, Wayne spent the next 22 years as a professor at Heidelberg College in Ohio, where he taught accounting, finance, geography and marketing courses. A chartered financial analyst, he worked several weeks each summer for the CFA Institute in Charlottesville, Va. When he retired from teaching, he moved to Lewes.
Along the way, he climbed a few mountains and sailed many miles. He walked in the rainforest along the Amazon River, visited Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes, rode an elephant in the jungles of Thailand, and visited Africa twice, once on safari in Kenya. More recently, he tracked down lighthouses in northern Scotland, and the American East Coast and Gulf Coast with the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
Wayne is a life member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the United States Power Squadron where he held squadron, district and national offices while teaching boating-safety courses for many years. He wrote several articles on finance and boating, and a book: “Lightships, Floating Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic.” He also taught a number of courses for Osher Lifelong Learning.
