We will miss Ron MacArthur

May 20, 2025
Ron MacArthur was reliably present at most Sussex County meetings until the pandemic lockdown. Sitting in the second row facing the podium, he would flip the panel behind the front row, put his laptop on it and get to work. We often sat behind him to chat and pick his brain.

When we were fighting the 7-Eleven application in Angola in 2019, we learned from Ron why some land-use applications (change of zone and conditional use) go to the council and some (subdivisions) do not.

Sussex County residents owe Ron big time for his diligent reporting of Sussex issues and for educating the public.

A funny story: Cape Gazette once had an ad looking for a photographer/reporter, and we panicked that Ron was leaving. We immediately contacted the publisher, insisting they must not allow Ron to leave. The next time we saw Ron, he said he got a raise.

Now Ron is gone. We mourn our loss.

With grateful heart,

Jens Wegscheider and Eul Lee

Only one letter per author will be published every 30 days regarding a particular topic. Authors may submit a second letter within that time period if it pertains to a different issue. Letters may not be critical of personalities or specific businesses. Criticism of public figures is permissible. Endorsement letters for political candidates are no longer accepted. Letters must be the author’s original work, and may not be generated by artificial intelligence tools.
