Week 23: No school sports this fall
It’s official. Fall sports in Delaware’s schools have been postponed until February. Under a plan approved by the State Board of Education and Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association, winter sports will begin practice Dec. 14, fall sports can start practice Feb. 19 and spring sports will start April 19.
More than 4,500 people have signed a petition urging school officials to rethink the decision and start fall sports on time. They point to ongoing weekly sports tournaments at DE Turf Sports Complex near Frederica and Sports at the Beach in Georgetown.
• Delmarva Christian Schools, a private school with locations in Georgetown and Milton, has started high school classes. New students reported Aug. 18 and all students were in classrooms, following health regulations, Aug. 19. The Milton campus for students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will open Aug. 26.
• The DE Relief Grants program has $100 million for small businesses and nonprofits affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Grants range from $30,000 to $100,000 and are based on 2019 revenue. Money can be used to purchase COVID-19-related safety equipment, refinance debt incurred due to the pandemic, for advertising efforts as a result of COVID-19 and for fixed expenses accrued during the pandemic.
