Week 7: Face coverings in public now mandatory

Positive COVID-19 cases continue to rise in state, Sussex County
April 27, 2020

As Week 7 of the COVID-19 state of emergency begins, the reality of the situation has hit harder. While positive cases in Delaware, and particularly in Sussex County, continue to rise, Gov. John Carney announced that schools have been canceled for the rest of the academic year. Sussex County now has more cases than New Castle County.

Starting April 28, everyone in the state must wear face coverings when out in public, including all employees in stores. Also, on April 28, Carney designated Sussex County as a COVID-19 hot spot. Health officials announced increased public testing by county hospitals over the next two weeks. Testing will start in Georgetown and Milford.

With events falling by the wayside, Rehoboth Beach officials have announced that all July 4th activities have been canceled, while, so far, Lewes has canceled the children’s games. In addition, Delaware State Fair officials have canceled all concerts.

In reaction to the increase in Sussex County cases, to end Week 6, Carney announced additional testing and outreach in Sussex County, including testing at poultry processing plants.
